Sediments are small visible or not visible particles or solids that can be naturally occurring or the result of human activities in water. In chemical engineering language of all other solids particles in water except bonded pairs of hydrogen and oxygen are called sediments. Sediment can make water cloudy and can also have a negative impact on its taste and smell.

Types of Sediments in portable water

Sediments in potable water include 

• Natural mineral
• Rock particles such as sand, silt and clay
• Fine soil particles mixed by flow of water
• Organic matter from plants  and soil.
• Metal rust and metal particles from old piping
• Microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites
• Industrial pollutants such as heavy metals and other harmful chemicals.

From where sediment gets mixed with water

• Water Source: Rivers, lakes, and groundwater wells naturally contain particles picked up from the environment. 
• Aging Infrastructure: Older pipes can corrode and release rust and other debris into the water. 
• Water Treatment Processes: While designed to remove impurities, some dissolved substances may become solid through oxidation and then become suspended solids.
